Nathan Doras is a Zambian musician currently living and studying in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is a multi-instrumentalist and producer making music and music videos under the alias Dark Horse Nebula. His music has a minimalistic foundation, with enveloping soundscapes contrasted by catchy grooves and melodies. His experimental sound is shown off on his debut EP, Yūgen, in which musical elements from dream pop, prog rock, video game soundtracks, and more are brought together to create a distinct yet nostalgic retro-inspired aesthetic. The EP primarily explores themes of self-discovery, self-expression, love, and loss.
"'untitled' is a song that tackles the topic of self love and self acceptance as well as how they affect our relationships with others. The music video recycles clips from the 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning, directed by Jennie Livingstone. The film documents drag ball culture of the 80s and 90s in New York City, capturing the experiences of black, hispanic, gay, and transgender individuals involved in it. The documentary explores lived experiences of people of colour in the LGBTQ+ drag community. It explores the performative nature of gender and, by extension, identity. Its use in the music video for 'untitled' is a commentary on the performative nature of identity in human relationships and on the importance of authenticity and self-acceptance in our quest to live fulfilling lives. The vocal samples in the song are taken from lectures given by the British writer and speaker Alan Watts, who is well known for popularizing concepts from Buddhism and other Eastern practices and philosophies for a Western audience."
